Understanding VA Educational Benefits
Below are the various U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) education benefits and GI Bill® programs available:
- Chapter 30: Montgomery GI Bill® – Active Duty (MGIB-AD)
- Chapter 31: Vocational Readiness and Employment (VR&E) Program (for Disabled Veterans)
- Chapter 33: Post-9/11 GI Bill®
- Chapter 35: Dependents’ Educational Assistance (DEA) Program
- Chapter 1606: Montgomery GI Bill® – Selected Reserve (MGIB-SR)
- Educational Dollars for Duty (Florida National Guard)
- Department of Defense Tuition Assistance (TA)
To apply for GI Bill® benefits, complete the required forms online at the VA website.

Required Documentation:
- Copy of DD Form 214: Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty (not applicable for dependents using VA benefits or active-duty members).
- Certificate of Eligibility (COE): From the VA or a Statement of Benefits from VA.gov (for Chapters 30, 33, and 35).
- PO Number: From your VA Veteran Readiness & Employment Case Manager (for Chapter 31).
- DD Form 2384-1: Notice of Basic Eligibility (NOBE) issued from the student’s guard/reserve unit (for Chapter 1606).
- Veteran Certification Request Form
